Unit 3: Culture AP Human Geography

Global Menu Project

Investigating Glocalization and Stimulus Diffusion through the golden arches.

Project Overview

McDonald's is a global corporation, but to survive in local markets, it must adapt. This is the essence of Glocalization. Your mission is to explore international menus to see how a "global" burger chain changes its products to fit local culture, religion, and taste.

🎯 Your Task

  • • Select 5 countries from the "Menus" tab.
  • • Pick at least 1 from each major region.
  • • Analyze menus for cultural clues.
  • • Record findings in your notebook.

💡 Key Concept

"Stimulus Diffusion"

When an idea (like a burger) spreads, but the specific trait is changed to fit the new culture (e.g., changing beef to potato in India).

Ready to Start?

Follow the tabs at the top of the page. Move to "Select Countries" when you are ready to explore.

Analysis Order

Order #302 • AP Human Geo

Please answer in your own notebook.

A The 5-Country Audit

For EACH country, record:

  • Language: (e.g., Japanese, French)
  • Vibe Check: Colors, music, types of people shown?
  • Breakfast Find: Name & Description of one item.
  • Main Meal Find: Name & Description of one unique burger/sandwich.
  • Sides/Dessert: What is weird or different? (e.g., Corn pie?)

B Cultural Deep Dive

1. The Halal Factor

Read the BBC article on Halal. Explain how McDonald's adapts to Islamic religious norms in the Middle East.

2. The Pork Prohibition

Why is the McRib missing in Saudi Arabia but present in Germany? Connect this to religious cultural traits.

C AP Concept Application

Stimulus Diffusion Analysis

Define Stimulus Diffusion in your own words. Then, identify TWO specific menu items that are examples of this concept.

Example: "The McAloo Tikki is a burger (idea diffused), but it uses potato instead of beef (trait adapted)."
