Topic 6.8: Urban Sustainability

Smart Growth, New Urbanism, and Greenbelts (IMP-6.C)

1. Fix the Zoning

Current Status: Sprawl. Low density, segregated land use. Click blocks to re-zone.

Walkability Score Low

2. Transit-Oriented Development (TOD)

Designing density around public transport stations.

Car Dependent: Land wasted on parking. Sprawl enabled by highways.

3. The Double-Edged Sword (IMP-6.D.1)

New Urbanism Paradox

New Urbanism creates highly desirable, walkable neighborhoods. But high demand drives up property values.

This leads to De Facto Segregation: Only the wealthy can afford to live in the "sustainable" city, while service workers are pushed to the exurbs.

Livability (Good) Low
Housing Cost (Bad) Affordable
As livability rises, affordability often falls (Gentrification).
